In 1866, Galen Clark became the first state-appointed guardian of Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Just two years earlier, the 1864 Yosemite Grant Act had designated the Valley and Mariposa Grove as the United States’ first federally preserved lands. Clark lived a simple life in Wawona, but he played a significant role in shaping the idea that the nation should preserve beautiful landscapes and natural resources for all, and for all time.

Today, Clark returns to Yosemite to share tales of navigating frontier life, meeting celebrity visitors, overcoming obstacles and ultimately forging a path for all future park rangers. We are delighted to welcome this dedicated park steward to the Yosemite Theater to share his story with you!
