Have you heard about #OptOutside? For the past few weeks, REI, one of our generous supporters, has been encouraging people to “opt outside” on Black Friday. We think it’s a good motto for the rest of the year, too!
That phrase got us thinking about all the ways people can "opt outside" in Yosemite, in every season. Snowshoe through sequoia groves. See spring wildflowers on Sierra "sky islands." Spend a summer afternoon on the shore of Tenaya Lake. Hone climbing techniques on the Valley's granite walls. Learn to "Leave No Trace" while backpacking through the wilderness.
We could go on! But for now, we want to pause and say thank you to our donors, who play a huge role in ensuring that people can “opt outside” every day in Yosemite National Park by …
- supporting trail projects that improve access to iconic Valley views, popular climbing routes and the park’s breath-taking backcountry, all while protecting natural resources;
- preserving Yosemite's biodiversity, beauty and wilderness character through projects that protect habitats, plants and wildlife, from restoring the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias to bringing endangered bighorn sheep back to the Cathedral Range;
- supporting scientific research and providing opportunities for people to try “citizen science,” whether by listening in on Yosemite's bats or learning about songbird conservation;
- helping young people who might not otherwise have a chance to explore the wilderness get outside through a range of Youth in Yosemite Programs – and in some cases, inspiring them to pursue careers in the park;
... and so much more!
By preserving the park’s resources and wilderness character while improving access for visitors of all ages, you help inspire people not only to get outside, but also to become active stewards of the natural world in Yosemite and beyond.
Thank you, from all of us at the Conservancy. We wish you a warm and happy holiday weekend — and hope that you have the chance to spend some of it outside!
