Beginner Backpack Trek to May Lake

June 27, 2014 to June 29, 2014

Discover the delights of backpacking. An outing to May Lake makes a perfect start: It’s a short hike to camp and a gorgeous location. You’ll begin on Friday with an evening orientation in Tuolumne Meadows and a review of needed gear, then hit the trail Saturday morning. Your leader is an expert Sierra naturalist, so in addition to understanding the fundamentals of campsite selection, tents, food, cooking, and staying warm and hydrated, you’ll also learn how to be safe in the wild and Leave No Trace practices. A gentle pace, with plenty of time in camp, will make this a memorable introduction to a popular pastime. You’ll have the option to summit Mt. Hoffmann on Sunday morning to reach 10,800 feet in elevation at Yosemite’s geological center. From the summit, you’ll look down into Yosemite Valley then turn around to face the northern peaks of Yosemite’s boundary. This is one of the only places in Yosemite to see all these views from one spot.

Experience package includes camping at Tuolumne Meadows Campground June 27 & 29, entry into Yosemite and wilderness permit.

Hiking: Moderate; about 3 miles total, optional summit of Mt. Hoffmann is additional 4 miles roundtrip from May Lake
