Yosemite Nature Notes: Bighorn Sheep
Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep are the rarest mountain sheep in North America. After the population dropped to around 100 animals in 1995, this unique sub-species was listed as an endangered species. For nearly 20 years, Conservancy donors have supported efforts to protect this icon of Yosemite’s wilderness icons. In 2015, the Conservancy helped fund a multi-partner project to reintroduce the sheep to their historic habitat for the first time in over 100 years.
